The riots of last October have shaken entire Algeria, the country which enjoyed a position of unusual esteem in Arab Africa and in the non-aligned world. The riots floated new thinking in the ruling circles. Since then, a wave of reforms followed, which ultimately led to the transformation of the political system to multi-party democracy. This paper tries to examine the consequences which led to the transformation. It deals with the political, economic and social processes since independence, in order to give a comprehensive background to the present change. (DÜI-Gbh)
